S'pore Woman Award finalist overcomes adversity to build business

SINGAPORE: One of the five Singapore Woman Award finalists, Tan Geok Muay, had to leave school at age 15 to help her family support seven other siblings.
Today, the 56-year-old is credited with helping to build her husband's successful food distributing business.
Her 23-year-old daughter, Claire Lee - who nominated her for the award - said Mdm Tan used to deliver meatballs all day. In fact, she resumed work just a day after she had given birth to Claire.
"She never gave up and if she gave up on this family many years ago, I believe we wouldn't be able to (have) what we have today because my father's business had many ups and downs, and my father actually went bankrupt twice in the past.
"We couldn't purchase any houses because we didn't have enough money, so we were staying on rental basis until two years ago," said Claire.
She said despite her mother's limited knowledge of English, she has helped to grow the family's meatball and lime juice business to where it is today - with one factory and eight employees.
Mdm Tan also makes it a point to volunteer every Tuesday when she is in town.
Claire said: "She always encourages me and no matter how little improvements I've had, she makes a really big deal out of it. It really makes me feel much better."
MediaCorp's Singapore Woman Award will be given out on May 7.
